Nathaniel Bassey, a native of Ikot Ofon Ikono in Uyo local government area, Akwa-Ibom state, South-South Nigeria, is a well-known name in the Nigerian gospel music industry. Born to Mr. E Joshua Bassey, a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly, Nathaniel found his love for music and the gospel at a tender age.

A concert by Dr Panam Percy Paul, an iconic Nigerian gospel artist, ignited Nathaniel’s passion for music over two decades ago. Since then, his musical journey has been a variety of enriching experiences.

Born on August 27, 1978, in Lagos, Nigeria, Nathaniel showed a unique interest in jazz music during his early years. He was influenced by the works of Jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, Hugh Masakela, and others. His enthusiasm for jazz led him to join the notable jazz quartet in Lagos, Spectrum 4, where he performed alongside his childhood friends.

Nathaniel, often known as “Nat”, caught the attention of Elder Steve Rhodes, a respected figure in the Nigerian jazz and music scene. He was invited to lead the Steve Rhodes Orchestra, the country’s first Jazz Orchestra. For two years, Nathaniel served as the band leader and lead trumpet player, carving a niche for his soulful trumpet playing style. His talent caught the ears of renowned artists and composers both locally and internationally.

Despite his mainstream success, Nathaniel felt a deeper spiritual calling. Under the guidance of the late Pastor Eskor Mfon, former Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish, Nathaniel stepped back from his growing career to devote himself to his faith. This decision was met with criticism from his peers, but Nathaniel held steadfast in his faith.

As his relationship with the Holy Spirit deepened, he realized the powerful role of music in praising and worshipping the Lord. This revelation led to the birth of his music ministry, focused on ‘Music of Heaven’ – music that ministered exclusively to the Lord and allowed Him to connect with His people. His signature trumpet playing and serene singing style have since led many into the presence of the Lord in concerts, crusades, and churches.
